Change update frequency of SharePoint 2010 rating and social data

With SharePoint 2010 you get item rating capability on your lists and library items. You can enable rating on pretty much any of your items which is right away sent to a Social Database . Social Database stores information immediately per URL per user profile.

Now if you notice, Average Rating control on the list will not pick up your latest ratings right away; this is because the synchronization between Social Database and Content Database happens on the schedule.

The reason is to save intense operation of going through each individual item in your list and calculating average on all votes. If it’s critical in your solution you can increase the speed of the execution and calculation up to minutes, here is how:

1. Navigate to your Central Administration
2. Select Monitoring
3. Select Time Job Definitions.
Here is the shortcut to the location http://[central admin]/_admin/ServiceJobDefinitions.aspx
4. Select User Profile Service Application – Social Rating Synchronization Job
Adjust you settings accordingly as shown below:

That’s it! Now your ratings are populated on your desired schedule.
