If you’re like me , you probably:

1. Have already started looking at development with SharePoint 2010.
2. Would like to be in control of your SharePoint page look at feel and that includes removing or adding those “I like it” & “tags and notes” buttons.

If you look at your C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\FEATURES\ you will notice SocialRibbonControl which is a Farm feature.

First, in order to have it activated you need to

1. Navigate to your SharePoint 2010 Central Administration
2. Click Manage services on server
3. Ensure you have configured Managed Metadata Web Service

When this service is activated ensure that:
1. Click on Manage Farm features
2. Ensure you have  Social Tags and Note Board Ribbon Controls activated/deactivated depending on your preference.

That’ll do the trick. Now on your pages you will see:

ilikeit

Here is a experimental developer note: if you want to build similar component to Social Tagging check out how SocialRibbonControl feature is built.

Enjoy!
